Swimming With Myopia: What Actually Works in the Water?

Myopia, or nearsightedness, makes distant objects look blurry. In a pool, you may struggle to read the pace clock, see the workout board, or judge the distance to the wall. In open water, blurred vision can make buoys, shore markers and other swimmers harder to identify.

Custom goggles are worth considering if your prescription is more complicated. That may include significant astigmatism, high myopia or a large difference between your right and left eyes. A custom supplier can build the lenses more closely around the prescription you provide.

There is a trade-off. Custom goggles usually cost more and take longer to make. Return conditions may also be stricter because the lenses were produced for one person.

And custom lenses will not rescue a badly fitting frame. A goggle still needs to suit the shape around your eyes and nose. If the frame only stops leaking when the strap is painfully tight, it is probably the wrong frame.

Can You Swim With Contact Lenses?

People do it, usually under a pair of regular goggles. It can feel like the simplest solution because you keep the vision correction you already use every day.

Health authorities do not recommend it. The CDC advises contact-lens wearers to remove their lenses before swimming. The FDA gives the same advice because pools, lakes, oceans and hot tubs can expose the eyes to microorganisms.

Water may cause a soft lens to swell, change shape or stick more tightly to the cornea. It can also trap microorganisms against the eye. One infection associated with water exposure is Acanthamoeba keratitis. It is uncommon, but it can be painful, difficult to treat and damaging to vision.

A snug pair of goggles reduces the amount of water reaching your eyes, but goggles are not guaranteed to remain completely dry. A small leak during a turn or a quick adjustment is enough to expose the lenses. Daily disposable contacts do not remove that risk.
